Fall/Spring Part-Time Intake Volunteers

Her Justice seeks part-time volunteers for the fall and spring semesters to assist with our Legal Help Line on Thursdays between 9:30AM – 1:30PM. The position requires a minimum commitment of 10 weeks and is based in our headquarter office located in lower Manhattan. 

Organization description

The mission of Her Justice is to improve the lives of women living in poverty in NYC through the provision of free legal services. Her Justice operates a “pro bono first” model, providing the bulk of legal services by connecting clients with volunteer lawyers from private firms. We specialize in the areas of family, matrimonial, and immigration law. Her Justice will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018.

Position responsibilities

Our Legal Help is a primary source for Her Justice to obtain clients; it is also a vital resource for callers seeking legal assistance. The Help Line is open every Thursday from 10AM – 1PM; volunteers should arrive early to set up their workstations and be prepared to answer calls at 10AM. Volunteers work under the supervision of Her Justice staff.

  • Answer the Legal Help Line and conduct client telephone intakes following the Intake protocol established by Her Justice using Legal Server

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students, graduates, law students, attorneys
  • Basic computer skills; experience with databases a plus
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, a plus

Candidates are encouraged to apply for funding with various sources and Her Justice will assist in filling out necessary paperwork with the funding source. Candidates are also encouraged to apply for externship credit with their schools for their internship at Her Justice, where appropriate.
